The Sound of Music

Beeston Arts Quartet is a professional string quartet based in Edinburgh, and can travel anywhere in Scotland to play on your wedding day. I spoke to Liz about what they do and how they do it.

Michael and Liz of Beeston Arts Quartet
As soon as I started speaking to Liz, I could tell she was a passionate professional. Both Liz and her husband Michael have been in the classical music business for a substantial time, being involved with names such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to name but a few, before forming a quartet of their own. With credentials like that, it’s easy to see why they are so well appreciated in their field.

“We don’t have ‘day jobs’ – classical music is what we do,” Liz tells me “and with our small group of professional players, we think we can provide something special for a bride and groom.”

I’d have to agree with Liz. My wife and I had a string quartet at our wedding and have to say it was money well spent. It really added a little something to the day and even now people tell us how lovely it was.

Beeston Arts Quartet takes the experience to new levels however. With a huge repertoire and the ability to learn pieces specifically for your wedding, coupled with a history of performing in all sorts of venues and for all sorts of occasions, I think this group really stands out from the crowd. Little touches like dealing directly with the venue to make sure everything is set up for them on the day means the bride and groom can relax knowing it’s all in hand.

“We make sure that we keep in touch with the couple though. We want them to know that we’re there to help out and make sure we can ease any worries they have.” Liz tells me she remembers all too well how many things she had to juggle on her own wedding day, so offers that little extra in terms of support which most string quartets wouldn’t even consider doing. “It’s about letting them know we’re there for them from the second they book until we bid a fond farewell.”

In terms of costs, I was pleasantly surprised to see that while offering an exceptional level of service, Beeston Arts Quartet has not opted to charge extortionate fees for what they do – in fact, having done a little research on the matter myself, the fees are actually lower than the market rate, with two hours costing £450.00. Additional hours are £100.00 each, and if your wedding is within Edinburgh there are no travel costs either. For those outside of Edinburgh, travel costs can be negotiated directly.

I asked Liz about availability, and she told me if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. Late availability is something that crops up here and there, so if you’ve been toying with the idea, it may be worth contacting Liz to see whether they are available for your wedding.

All in all, I like how Liz, Michael and the players approach things – they are professional in the way they provide their service, and also in how they perform, and successfully couple this with a personalised service that you can only be impressed with.
